What Can I Do With A Computer Science Degree?

This module introduces students to the fundamental concepts for graphical representation, information management, database systems and data modelling. The capture, digitisation, representation, organisation, transformation and presentation of information is explored using conceptual and physical data models. This module is aimed at students who may be undertaking an industrial placement in the third year of their programme. It is designed build on the Level 1 module and to assist students in their search for a placement and in their preparation for the placement itself. It is designed to assist students in their search for a placement and in their preparation for the placement itself.

  • The University also offers a range of additional financial support for students studying at Birmingham in the form of other bursaries, grants and scholarships.
  • New and optimised technologies and systems will continue to shape a modern and progressive society.
  • Recent graduates from Computer Science have gone on to work at amazing organisations including Sega Europe, Canon UK, and EE.
  • The aim of this module is to teach the students advanced programming techniques using Java in order to support its use on other modules.
  • When our new engineering and design facility is launched, students in engineering, science and the arts will have access to a range of specialist equipment and innovative laboratories.

That’s why in your second year you will work in a team to produce software and also learn new styles of programming in Java, a language widely used in business and industry, and a second language. The course emphasises both the underlying theories of computer science and their practical application, so as to provide solutions to real-world problems. Building on these programming skills, you learn the principles and techniques that underpin the algorithms and systems shaping our world today. These include artificial intelligence, computer security, network technology, software engineering, and human-computer interaction. Using your knowledge you develop software in small-scale exercises before completing a major software project. This module will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the principles, practices and measures of virtual reality technology and the development of interactive 3D worlds.

What Is Computer Science?

The course content is annually reviewed within the School of Computing, Electronics and Mathematics in consultation with industry experts to ensure its currency and validity.
