In addition, you will be expected to undertake significant self-directed study each week, depending on the demands of individual modules. The curriculum has been designed with the aim of supporting you in pursuing employment or further research opportunities in computing or IT related fields. You’ll learn how to specify, design and construct computer-based systems, evaluate and recognise potential risks and design creative solutions. If your course doesn’t offer this, look for IT-related work placements, internships or shadowing opportunities advertised via your careers service or through companies such as Step and Year in Industry. We work with both local and global companies such as Google, Capital One and Microsoft on student projects and to offer work placements. Situated on the western edge of our city centre campus, the landmark new facility will provide a home for the School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics and additional space for the School of Art, Design and Architecture.

You will be part of the School of Computing, based in the Urban Sciences Building on our Newcastle Helix area of campus. The information below is intended to provide an example of what you will study. Given the changing nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, the commitments outlined are subject to guidelines that may be in place from time to time.

  • For admission onto an Undergraduate degree programme, the University of Birmingham requires all applicants to have studied for 13 years, and therefore you may need to take a foundation year before commencing your undergraduate programme.
  • • Our diverse academic team will develop your knowledge of fundamental computer science concepts and how they can be applied to solve real-world problems.
  • This MOOC will provide an understanding of the basic idea of machine learning, including a machine learning project on training a computer to recognise images.
  • The content of this course acknowledges the borderless nature of computer science alongside the common practices and technologies used throughout the globe.
  • The purpose of accreditation is to confirm that our course meets the required standards for entering a career in the IT industry.

When access to the campus is restricted they operate regular virtual meet-ups. You will build on Year 1, covering more advanced programming and data structures, together with the related mathematics and broader professional and societal issues. Our degree flexibility allows you to tailor your experience to your interests and be in control of your learning. The Computer Science Department is based in the brand new Computational Foundry, which opened in 2018. This £32.5M world-class computational science facility provides the most up-to-date, high-quality teaching and research facilities, as well as networking and inspiration space for students, staff and industrial partners.

International Experience Opportunities

This module covers the development of modern computer architectures for servers, workstations, hand-held devices, signal processing and embedded systems from the introduction of the four-stage RISC pipeline to the present day. The networking aspect of this module will expose students to the principles of layered communication protocols, the architecture of the Internet, and the principles of how the components of the TCP/IP layered model are designed and operate. This module aims to give students an understanding of the fundamentals of computer hardware and of the principles of operation of computers and peripheral devices. In addition, the module aims to give an overview of the main families of microprocessors an…

Discover Uni draws on national data to provide average salaries and employment/continuation data. Discover Uni is currently piloting use of the Longitudinal Education Outcomes data to demonstrate possible career progression; it is important to note that this is experimental and its use may be modified as it embeds. Group projects during the course, where small teams of students deliver a product to an external client, ensure relevant industrial experience. Our students benefit from the Department’s cutting-edge research and extensive facilities. The purpose-built Department of Computer Science and Technology is packed with the latest technology, advanced lecture theatres and dedicated practical rooms.
