Sculptures on the outer wall of temples have been a common practice in India. There are numerous temples in India that have enhanced its exteriors with carved sculptures. However, what is rare about Khajuraho temples are the erotic sculptures. It is said that, the sculptures are made to look erotic with a reason; for the devotees to be able to focus on spiritualism ignoring the materialistic pleasures.
Secondly, it is rare also because of the depiction of tantra texts on the walls. Although, the recent Tantric Babas have brought bad name for Tantras, in the ancient days it was used positively to make the best use of life.
These temples were constructed between 10th to 12th centuries and are believed to have taken about a century to finish. The sculptures in Khajuraho has once again proved that even in the ancient times Indians believed that the best form of art is the art that has a message in it to benefit the man-kind. Even if it takes hundred years to finish the piece of art. The idea then was not only to create something but to create something for which there was a deep passion.
The whole of temple’s exterior has cravings of men and women doing their day to day chores. These men and women have been carved in such a manner so as to look like god and goddess. The artist has used his imagination in a magnificent way and there is a strong connection between each of the sculptures.
