Rangoli is one very commonly found art form in India. In south of India some families still follow the tradition of decorating the front of the house with Rangoli. During Diwali, a prime festival in India, it is drawn in front of the house to invite Goddess Laxmi into the house. There are some stories attached about the beginning of this art. It also has this profound comparison with life and the illusion of life. As beautiful the rangoli looks, it is temporary and can be destroyed with one blow of wind anytime.
Rangoli is a combination of words Rang and Avalli which means colorful creepers. Initially, the designs made had more floral touch however with the changing times the themes for rangoli designs has got more experimental. Rangoli design competitions are held where creativity is given preference. Artists draw superb rangoli based on the Socio-economic situations of the country or on the current events.
It is a low cost affair and hence any common man can indulge in this art form. The only draw back is, it is not something one can buy and take home. Nevertheless, the satisfaction for the artist and the viewer is at par with any other form of art. Originally, to create a rangoli, powder of white stone is mixed with synthetic color powder. However, some people do it in a more creative manner using flower petals etc. In any form, when an expert draws a Rangoli design, it sure is a visual delight for the onlooker.
