Another of the famous Indian outfit known world over is the Pyjama. A Pyjama is a loose fitting pant that is high on comfort level. On top of the pyjama a string runs inside a gap that is kept for the string. The two ends of the string are then tied together. The word Pyjama is an amalgamation of two words Pa- legs and Jama – cloth. In India, it is mostly seen to be made with Cotton material however in cold countries like UK, US they use woolen material too.
It’s a very comfortable wear and hence many prefer to use it as night wear however in India it is used as day wear also. It makes a good combination with Kurta, a top covering garment. Designer pyjamas are worn for festivals and other occasion. Most politicians in India are seen in Kurta pyjama as it gives a very ethnic and patriotic look. Indian Men and Women of all age feel comfortable to be seen in pyjama. Due to the global exposure, it has both a traditional as well as modern image.
Unlike some pyjamas found in the west, the Indian pyjama does not have a feet portion it comes only till the ankle. Both men and women wear Pyjamas with kurta, t-shirts. It is amazing that garment like Pyjamas have successfully passed the test of time. Over the years, there has been a lot of improvement in the pyjama however it is still used by Indians. Although, also by people world over but that is for limited purpose.
