It is the marble Jain temples of Rajasthan (Ranakapur and Mount Abu) that are truly remarkable and have no rival in the Profusion of their rich sculptural ornamentation. Marble is such a pristine material that the temple interiors have a pure ascetic quality about them. At the same time the hard stone allowed for the most intricate workmanship. In these 1000-year-old structures the ceilings, pillars, and walls are actually teeming with religious images and sculptural decorations, patterns, and figurines.
