The great Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore wrote and composed many songs in his own individual style. This collection of distinctive, extraordinary music came to be known as Rabindra Sangeet. It starts out with traditional kind of music but then evolves into a unique form.
It has a wide range of emotions and moves across society barriers to reach out to different milieu of people to bring them together in its appreciation. Its beauty lies in the fact that both the ordinary person as well as one well versed in music can appreciate its melody.
It reaches great heights in satisfying the soul with its unique compositions and goes to great depths in bringing out the meaning to thoughts conveyed in the songs.
Though, it became quite well known and popular later on, initially it was met with resistance from the classical musicians of that time, who took time to come around.
Rabindra Sangeet has a loyal, almost fanatic following at West Bengal in India and Bangladesh. The national anthem of both the nations is courtesy Rabindra Sangeet.
Any attempts by modern musicians to make changes in its original form are severely criticized by its followers.
Some of the great singers who popularised this music are Pankaj Mallik, Kanika Bandhopadhay, Debabrata Biswas etc. This music has also found a loyal fan following among great Indian film makers like Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Ritwik Ghatak and others. Even some foreign filmmakers who were not left untouched by its extraordinary composition have used it in their films.
