Another dance form from South of India, Andhra Pradesh to be precise… Kuchipudi got its recognition from this state as it was re-developed here. The costumes, music, steps have some resemblance to Bharat Natyam but it`s still a lot different than Bharat Natyam. In Kuchpudi, the expressions on the dancers are less dramatic, fast movements, more footwork. The dancer also present various pose as in the temple sculptures.
The name of this dance form is inspired from Kuchelapuram, Andhra Pradesh where this art form got a re-birth. The basic theme with Kuchipudi also is of devotional type. A lot of patience and dedication is expected from enthusiasts wanting to learn Kuchpudi. Earlier, Men would perform Kuchipudi wearing female costume. However, now they dance as the male companion of the female dancer. But it is more common to see female dancers in Kuchipudi dance.
The best element of Kuchipudi dance is Tarangam. Here the dancer balances on the top of a brass plate and dances or the dancer dances with mud or metal pot over their head. It is not an easy task to do. The dancer needs to have all their focus and attention on the dance; one wrong step can spoil the dance. But the trained Kuchipudi dancers manage to get the art right after years of practice.
To conclude, Kuchipudi dance form emphasizes on presentation, speech and last but not the least dance. All of the three should be in perfect co-ordination to bring out the perfection, Kuchipudi dance demands.
