Most Gujarati people being spiritual and peace loving lot, have more inclination towards vegetarian food. They don’t believe in killing animals to satisfy their appetite or taste. However, in the vegetarian section alone they have a wide variety of food. And as hard core food lovers, they don’t stop inventing and re-inventing dishes. The best thing about Gujarati cooking is it is not very complicated; even if you are not an expert cook you can fare reasonable well.
In a Gujarati meal plate popularly known in India as Thali would consist of Rice, Indian bread (Roti), pulses gravy (Daal) and a medium spiced Vegetarian dish (Shaak). This also can be called the balanced diet. This is only the basic meal for a gujarati yet is a complete diet. To add to the Gujarati cuisine there is a lot more to the list. Namely, Undhiya, Khichdi, Handvoh, Kadi etc.
More than the dishes Gujarati cuisine is famous for its snacks like Khaman dokla, Khandvi, Farsans, Sev Ghantia, Papdi etc. In fact, most of these snacks can be had with meals or at snack times, as one likes. After spicy and salty dishes, now time for something sweet. Most Gujarati love sweets and hence there has to be a dessert. This can be the Aam ras (thick juice of Mangoes), Shrikand (Yoghurt mixed with nuts, saffron, powdered cardamom), Gharis.
