
The Goddess of Wealth is Goddess Lakshmi according to the Hindu religion. Daughter of Brighu and Khyati, Goddess Lakshmi resided in the sea before Samundra manthan happened (Churning of sea). During Samundra manthan she came out from the sea and married Lord Vishnu. Whenever Lord Vishnu took human birth and came to earth, goddess Lakshmi was also with him as his partner. And hence wherever Lord Vishnu is worshipped, goddess Lakshmi likes to be there.
Many worship goddess Lakshmi as the goddess of wealth however she is worshipped for many other virtues also. For one who would pray to Goddess Lakshmi with a pure heart will be graced with love, luck, beauty, fertility, power and material as well as spiritual wealth.
On closely observing a picture of Goddess Lakshmi, we can see a beautiful lady in a red sari with four hands, seated or standing on a lotus. From her front right hand pours gold coins, which depicts that she is the giver of wealth. With her front left hand, she blesses her devotees. With the right hand in the back she has a lotus flower which represents purity and beauty and in left hand a metal pot that contains amrutjal(nectar) which signifies immortality.
In India, in one of the days of Deepawali, it is Lakshmi puja day. On this day, people light up their home, draw rangoli at the entrance, decorate the house with flowers, and wear new clothes to welcome Goddess Lakshmi into their house. Evening all the family comes together and pray for Goddess Lakshmi`s blessing and request her to forever stay in their house.
