More than 400 hundred years of Portuguese rule, left Goa with a rich legacy of music. The Goan music is essentially a very dynamic blend of indigenous Goan music and Western music.
Goans have many different forms of music as per the region and the occasion demands. People of Goa love music and they encourage it even in the schools.
Folk music constitutes an integral part of the Goan music scene. Suvari is one of the famous folk music of Goa. In this, the spoken words are less and the music lays heavy emphasis on the tunes and beats.
Then there is the popular Mando of Goa. Mando is of two types, the love song and the other one called the Latin taste. In the love song, Ghumat and violin are used to describe love. In Latin taste, the music starts off slowly, picks up and then moves to fast pace. It essentially has a Latin American feel. In this the song is sung alternately by boys and girls or jointly in chorus.
Some of the other music from Goa is Lagan Geet or a wedding song, Gadya Ramayan or narrations from Ramayan, Gudulya Geetam or narrations of stories through the night etc.
Thanks to the hippies who came in the 1960-70`s and stayed back another music called the Goa trance was created. The foreigners developed this music which was a mix of Indian and techno style leading to the emergence of trance. It became very popular among the younger generation and also spread to other countries.
