In India, Salwar Kameez is a very popular outfit. More commonly worn by females between the age group of fifteen to forty’s unless its their traditional outfits as in the case of Punjabi, Sindhi ladies. The entry of Salwar Kameez into India’s dressing culture is a result of Mughal invasion. From that era till date there have been many changes to it.
Usually, a Salwar Kameez set has three piece of clothing. The Kameez which is a top that is of below knee length; the Salwar, a lose fitting pant with is slightly tight fit around ankle and finally the Duppata, a stole like cloth which is more in size than a stole. When the same garment is worn with a tight fighting pant, with slit on the sides of the top, it is called Chudidaar.
The Salwar kameez is more comfortable than a Chudidaar and hence is more preferred for daily use and Chudidaars are kept for special occasions. Decade after decade the demand for Salwar kameez has been rising. Main reasons being it’s simple to wear, easy of movements, comes in variety of colors and designs and reasonably priced.
There was a time when married ladies would not wear Salwar Kameez but only Saris. But with the changing times, it is observed that many married ladies have started to wear Salwar Kameez to work etc. Young girls stitch Salwar Kameez out of their mom’s old Saris. Doubtlessly, it has now become one of the traditional Indian Garments and is here to stay.
